Description

A sweet and easy twist on classic French toast using soft, delicious Hawaiian rolls!

Ingredients

  • 4 Large eggs Use fresh for best results
  • ½ cup Milk Whole milk for creaminess (can substitute with almond milk for vegan option)
  • 1 tbsp Vanilla extract Pure extract for flavor (not imitation)
  • ½ tsp Ground cinnamon Adds warmth (can increase for more spice)
  • ¼ tsp Salt Enhances sweetness (don’t skip)
  • tsp Ground nutmeg Optional (for extra warmth)
  • 2 tbsp Unsalted butter For cooking (can use vegan butter)
  • 12 Hawaiian rolls (24 pieces Slice horizontally for dipping)
  • Powdered sugar For topping Optional (for dusting)
  • Maple syrup For serving Optional (for drizzling)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rolls:
  2. Slice each Hawaiian roll horizontally in half to create two thinner sections. This method of slicing allows the bread to absorb more custard, resulting in a soft and creamy center.
  3. How to Make the Custard:
  4. In a large bowl combine eggs and half and half in a whisk. Mix in the vanilla flavor, brown sugar, and cinnamon. I also like to stir in a little bit of nutmeg for extra warmth, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to.
  5. Cook the French Toast:
  6. Warm up a flat cooking surface or large frying pan on medium-low heat, melt a tablespoon of butter, dip each roll half in the egg mixture for 30 seconds per side, then cook until golden brown on both sides (about 2-3 minutes per side). I find using a non-stick pan helps prevent sticking, especially if you’re cooking in batches.
  7. Serve:
  8. Put the food on a plate and serve it while it’s warm. You can add toppings like powdered sugar, maple syrup, or fresh berries. I also like to add a spoonful of whipped cream for an extra special touch. Hawaiian Roll French Toast being pan-fried in melted butter.

Notes

Don’t Over-Soak: The key to perfect Hawaiian Roll French Toast is to avoid over-soaking the rolls. They should be coated but not saturated.

Medium Heat: Cooking over medium heat ensures that the French toast cooks evenly without burning.

Baked: For a larger batch, you can arrange the soaked rolls on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
